On the occasion of first Jammu and Kashmir visit of new Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor, at least seven militants were killed in different operations even as the new commander categorically ruled out in troop reduction in the state.
Insisting that there is a rise in militancy-related violence in Jammu and Kashmir , new General Kapoor said there will be no troop reduction till the state returns to normalcy. In a grim reminder of October 2005 devastating earthquake, a mild tremor rocked the northern parts of the Kashmir Valley Saturday morning.
Indian Meteorological department's N.P. Bhatnagar said, "it was a minor one and it was not felt in Srinagar though reports from neighbouring areas like Ganderbal, Sumbal, Kangan and Sonamarg also felt the shock. No further details were immediately known.
In 2005, a massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale rocked both sides of Kashmir. More than 80,000 people were killed and thousands were left homeless. Most destruction occurred in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan.... | |
