Services cripple under moderate snowfall in Valley | | | Ahmed Ali Fayyaz

SRINAGAR, Dec 30: Season's first snowfall in the Valley plains is not threatening to be intense but it has, nevertheless, crippled essential services as Kashmir remained cut off from rest of the country and the world today. Surface as well as air communication links to the Valley have been snapped and the continuing snowfall, that began last evening, has badly affected supply of electricity and drinking water in all 10 districts in Kashmir province.
Much awaited snowfall began after two hours of moderate rain in entire Kashmir valley last evening. It continued intermittently for 30 hours till midnight today. Reports suggested moderate to heavy snowfall in the high altitude areas. Officials told Early Times late tonight that accumulation of 15 inches had been recorded in Shopian hilly terrain while as it 16 inches at Jawahar Tunnel, on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, 20 inches at Gulmarg and 14 inches at Sonmarg.

CBI registers case in Batra college entrance test scam | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 30: In the August 21 Batra medical college entrance test scam in which seven fake examinees, including two girls, were apprehended while impersonating the wards of the rich and influential, including GM Saroori and Rampal, CBI has registered a case.
Saroori, who that time was works minister, was forced to quit by chief minister Omar Abdullah after his name had figured in the scam.
A girl was found impersonating his daughter Huma Tabassum.
Rampaul, a senior NC leader, was too alleged to have arranged a fake examinee for his son Lovish Bharat.
Official sources said the Jammu wing of CBI had registered a case in this connection and formed a special team.

JAMMU, Dec 30: While the upper reaches of Jammu province experienced heavy snowfall, the winter capital of the state received about 40 mm rainfall in the past 24-hours, plummeting further the day temperature in the region.
The rain which started on Wednesday evening continues to fall throughout the day in Jammu city and other parts of the region due to which the normal life remained affected.
It was raining cats and dogs which forced the people to remain indoors so as to protect them from downpour and biting cold as the temperature dipped to about 15 Degree Celsius.

JAMMU, Dec 30: Northern command GOC-in-C, Lt Gen BS Jaswal today said AFSPA is a must for the functioning of security forces in J&K. His statement has come ahead of the meet of cabinet committee on security to discuss the proposal for amendment to AFSPA. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah too has spoken for the dilution of the act. "AFSPA is a must as far as the functioning of security forces is concerned and that is my stand," he told reporters in reply to a question about army's stand on AFSPA.

JAMMU, Dec 30: Dec 30: Due to burning of Bainglad feeder (panel) at Samba, some areas in the district were today plunged into darkness. The feeder, which had developed some fault, was repaired this afternoon and electricity restored to Samba.
Official sources said the feeder blasted at about 4.30 pm and caught fire as a result of which several Samba areas were plunged into darkness.
The fire was extinguished by a fire tender which was pressed into service soon after the incident. The repair work on the feeder was in progress when reports last came in this evening, the sources added.

JAMMU, Dec 30: The Northern Railways is contemplating to double the track between Pathankot and Samba for the trains to run on time.
This would also sort out the problem of some trains forced to wait for other trains coming from opposite directions in view of the existing single track.
With the doubling of tracks, the railway tracks would soon witness quick passage of trains. The detention of trains on the existing single line waiting for the trains coming from opposite direction would also come to an end. The Permanent Way (PW) officials of the railways said the double tracks would also improve the punctual running of the trains.
