24 pc turnout amid boycott in Srinagar; modest polling in Ganderbal, Budgam

Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, May 7: Even as the separatist Hurriyat Conference-sponsored boycott to the Lok Sabha elections had a substantial impact in all the eight segments in Srinagar, moderate to brisk polling was recorded in seven rural segments in Ganderbal and Budgam districts. Polling in the Central Kashmir Lok Sabha constituency of Srinagar-Budgam, as also in the Assembly constituency of Sonwar, came to an end this evening with 24 percent voter turnout. 11.06 Lakh electors were entitles to vote in the penultimate phase of Lok Sabha elections in Jammu & Kashmir. While there are 15 candidates in the fray, ruling National Conference’s Dr Farooq Abdullah and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s Maulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari are widely believed to be the key contestants in Central Kashmir. In the by-election for Sonwar Assembly segment, that had been necessitated due to the elected MLA Dr Farooq Abdullah’s resignation in February, NC’s Mohammad Yasin Shah and PDP’s Mohammad Ashraf Mir, are unanimously rated as the key contestants. NIRBHAY JAMMUAL The ongoing Lok Sabha election in the six constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir has remained a period of howlers from contesting parties. National Conference President, Farooq Abdullah is ahead of others in the game of dishing out howlers. While campaigning in favour the party candidates he has dubbed the PDP as the baby of the BJP. And when the PDP shared power with the Congress the same Farooq Abdullah would treat the PDP as the baby of the Congress. He had meant that the Congress had been instrumental in floating the PDP. Now that the National Conference shares power with the Congress its President, Farooq, has found it expedient to dub the PDP as the baby of the BJP.H...

Sandeep Bhat Jammu, 7th May: Kashmiri Pandits (KP) has once again shown cold response to the ongoing elections in the state. Out of 12040 votes of which M-forms were received by the electioneering agencies only 964 votes were polled at 13 polling booths in Jammu and Udhampur, while out of 922 votes only 60 votes were polled. In total only 8% and 6.5% voter turn out was recorded for Srinagar-Budgam Parliamentary constituency and Sonawar Assembly bi-elections respectively.
