| SMC's market checking task force defunct, member attached with Adm Deptt | | | early times report Srinagar, Dec 13 (KNS): In the backdrop of death of a child at Kulgam allegedly due to consumption of expired food stuff, Srinagar city is lacking proper monitoring mechanism to ensure quality control of products and essential commodities. According to official sources, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has rendered defunct its Special Task Force (STF) meant for the purpose of regular monitoring and checking of markets. They alleged that expired products are available in the markets risking the lives of citizens. Sources told KNS that the members STF established by Health Officer of SMC have been made useless by taking their powers of market checking away and attaching them with Administrative department. "This step was taken after STF had penalized high profile business establishments in the City and had wasted their products worth lacs of rupees after finding them expired. Under the Political and Administrative pressure the STF team was disbanded", the sources told KNS. However, Helath Officer of the Corporation, Dr. Rubeena said that market checking is going on to ensure qualitative and fresh products to consumers. "It is not true that any STF team has been made defuct. Today I along with team was on visit at Nowshehra and other areas for market checking", said Rubeena. She said that there is no pressure from any side and the authorities are performing their duties sincerely. "We have taken some samples from various mills including Khyber milk", she informed. Pertinently, Srinagar localities have complained about availability of expired and sub standard products in the market.
