| Omar must advocate one party rule: Vakil | | Fighting corruption in coalition | | Early Times Report rafiabad, Dec 13: Former Minister and Member AICC Abdul Gani Vakil today said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah must advocate one party rule if he finds it difficult to fight corruption in a coalition Government. He was addressing a convention of Panches and Sarpanches at Hadipora Rafiabad today. He said Congress has always advocated for equitable development of all the three regions of the State as it will strengthen the bond of unity and integrity. He cautioned the people about communal and divisive forces who are hell bent on dividing the State on regional lines. Vakil said that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh have to stay together and it is the need of hour that people should understand the nefarious designs of divisive forces. Exhorting the workers to strengthen Congress, Vakil said that the only way for this is to serve the people whole heartedly. He said that Madam Sonia Gandhi herself refused the post of Prime Minister and instead preferred to serve the people without holding any office. The AICC member said that all party men particularly Ministers have to work hard in addressing as well as redressing the problems of the common people and they should come up to their expectations so that party gets further strengthen. Vakil reiterated his demand of incorporation of 73rd and 74th amendments of Indian constitution and said empowerment of the basic democratic institutions of Panchayats was necessary for equitable development in all parts of the State. "Congress party is committed for empowerment of Panchayati Raj System on the pattern of 73rd and 74th amendment of the constitution. This will streamline the system of governance for effective delivery of welfare schemes to the people at the grass root level," he added. The former Minister asked the Government to immediately hold the elections to local bodies and municipal committees so that people at grass root level are empowered. The unprecedented delay, he said was causing great unrest amongst people and it is also against the very policies of Congress. The Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said were giving liberal financial assistance to the State and by putting in place the elected local bodies Government would be strengthening the democratic institutions and empowering people to spend money according to their needs. Others who addressed the Panches and Sarpanches' convention include Congress leader and MLC Haji Ali Bhat, General Secretary J&K PCC Dr. Abdul Ahad Yatoo and Youth Congress leader Altaf Ahmad Malik. |
