| Amnesty twists facts to challenge conviction of Afzal Guru | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 13: Amnesty International, which always had dubious stand on Indian rule of law, had now opposed the hanging of the terrorist Afzal Guru, convicted in the Parliament attack, 11-yr back on Dec 13. It had also questioned the manner in which Mumbai terrorist attack Ajmal Kasab was hanged. The Amnesty released a statement on the day when the nation was paying homage to servicemen who laid down their lives for saving the temple of Indian democracy-Parliament. In letter to the President, the Amnesty said, :" Mohammad Afzal Guru was tried by a special court under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Amnesty International has found that these trials did not conform with India's obligations under international human rights law." The Amnesty is factual incorrect, on this assertion, and had deliberately twisted fact. The factual position is Guru was awarded death sentence by a Delhi court on December 18, 2002 after being convicted of conspiracy to attack Parliament on December 13, 2001, waging war against the country and murder. The death sentence was upheld by Delhi High Court on October 29, 2003 and his appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court two years later on August 4, 2005. The rejection of appeal by the Apex Court, implies that it has upheld the order of High Court and as such has acknowledged that conviction was done after following due process of the law. Amnesty has thus by this assertion questioned the credibility of the rule of the law and its court, which are respected all over the world and had in fact put most powerful persons, including sitting Cabinet Ministers behind the bar. It thus exposes the true intention of the Amnesty International, whose source of funding is also a matter of debate and concern. Not only that it has even questioned why secrecy was maintained on the execution of Ajmal Kasab. Its statement said why this information was not given much before-of his hanging- to Kasab when it had been done in the past. Little did Amnesty acknowledge that in the present situation of international terrorism- where groups are interconnected- the secrecy was necessary and even the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had hailed the Government for keep it a secret. |
