| Uncertainty prevails in Assembly complex, rains give fillip to apprehensions | | Experts to assess ‘unsafe’ status, opinion awaited | | early times report Jammu, Dec 13: Uncertainty prevailed for second day with regard to status of the Assembly Secretariat complex parts of which suffered damage on Tuesday due to excavation and erosion of soil from beneath due to heavy construction work on the new project. While heavy rains that lashed Jammu this evening deepened the apprehensions of possible further damage to historic building , the team of experts from Delhi which was expected to arrive today to assess the position on technical grounds and judge it from safety point of view, could not make it for unspecified reason. The team of expert consultants are now expected to reach Jammu today for on spot assessment following which decision would be taken on shifting of the entire Secretariat to some alternative place. Even as the weather remained inclement throughout the day , it was the heavy shower in the evening that intensified the worries and apprehensions of the officials about possibility of the cracks and crevices in the building deepening which could result in collapse of portions of the building, as has been indicated by engineers and technical people , though unofficially." We are keeping our fingers crossed that rains should not continue for longer duration for this would prompt the move for shifting of the Secretariat…", said a senior official. The Secretariat has otherwise to be shifted particularly for ensuing Budget session of Legislature but we still have sufficient time for this step….", he said adding that it is not a easy job to shift over 50 year old.
