Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 20: Assailing the decision of the state government to increase the honorarium of Lambardars/ Chowkidars by Rs 250 per month only, the Lambardars- Chowkidars Association said today that the government has played a joke with thousands of Chowkiddars/Lambardars by backtracking from the proposed hike of Rs 1000.
In a press statement issued here today, President Lambardars-Chowkidars Association Hajji Bashir Ahmad Teli said that the then Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla had proposed Rs 1501 and 1500 as honorarium for Lambardars/ Chowkidars respectively from the existing Rs 501 and Rs 500, however, by announcing an increase of Rs 250 the government has cheated the whole community.
Teli said that the government could have sanctioned an increase of Rs 1000 since it has already carved the resources for the hike in the honorarium of Lambardars / Chowkidars as the statistical data revealed that Government raised fee and service taxes and procured Rs 42 Crores annually.
He further said that to raise the honorarium to Rs 1501 and 1500 per month it required only 18 crores annually which means it is not a burden on Government and it will be borne by using the revenue generated from general masses of which Lambardars /Chowkidars are inseparable part.
Teli said that the step motherly treatment of the Government meted towards our community does not commensurate with the duty performed by thousands of Lambardars /Chowkidars.
He said that in the last two decades of turmoil a large number of Lambardars / Chowkidars lost their lives adding that they never showed any laxity in performing their duty in the peak of militancy and shouldered every responsibility then why the government humiliated them.
