Policing or schooling for Cops? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 20: The advertisement of the Police Public School at RS Pora makes an interesting read. After a brief introduction of the school, the advertisement depicts a message. The message merits special mention here. "Education is the way that leads a child from darkness to light and brings total growth and excellent placement in future." While nobody can contest the wisdom in the message, a few uncomfortable questions arise. Isn't it necessary to have a similar school for the police personnel and the officers? The demand for policing the police was always there. Following the recent incidents in the city of temples and elsewhere in the state, the demand has become more important and has gained momentum. A senior police officer uses abusive language against women. He is found guilty of violating the code of conduct but the government takes no action. Another police officer molests a Jammu University student in his police lock up. Instead of punishing the erring officer, he is promoted. Surprisingly, the police department also ignored these grave violations of code of conduct. The results are obvious. On the one hand the police hold public darbaars across the state to project a people friendly picture of the vital force but on the other hand no action is taken against insiders for an offence like molestation. This is the reason that the people, by and large, stay away from the police. Can the concerned do some explaining? When will the force become capable of leading people from darkness to light? |
