Speaker's election on Feb 28: Rethinking in NC over Gul's name | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 20: With formal announcement of date for election of new Speaker for Legislative Assembly, ball has been set rolling for taking a final call on choosing the name for the coveted post within ruling National Conference. Even as former advisor to Chief Minister Mubarak Gul's name was considered as front runner for the post, there is rethinking in the high command over it as few more names are under consideration on account of certain factors that emerged post reshuffle exercise effected on January 15. Sources said the dust has not yet settled on political developments in terms of discontentment in certain quarters post reshuffle, which was done in a massive manner particularly within NC. It is in the backdrop of this as also on the consideration that Speaker's post needed to be filled by someone who is law knowing that NC leadership is having a rethinking on its earlier thought of 'adjusting' Mubarak Gul on the post. Off the three persons who remained closely associated with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Gul is the only one who is yet to be settled and adjusted against a 'suitable' post by the party leadership. Sources said there is a thinking going on the lines that since Kashmir has got more than required representation within the Council of Ministers, Speaker's post should be filled by a person within the Jammu region. However, considering the significance of the highest post, rethinking is also going on other factors before NC high command takes a final decision, sources said adding that Gul may or may not eventually be the unanimous choice , there are contenders from Jammu region like Abdul Ghani Vakil, SS Salathia and even Rashpal Singh, who are at present in reckoning for the post. Sources said thrust from a section within the party to have a Speaker from Jammu region is also on the anomaly that since Congress, coalition's main ally, too has its Chairman from Jammu region, NC should also give preference to have an 'appropriate' and 'suitable' person selected for Speaker's post. On Feb 28 , whoever, the final choice of NC, the Speaker in all probability would be chosen unanimously without any formal election by the two allies in coalition and MLA’s of opposition parties. |
