'NC rode on Congress shoulders to rise to power' | Coalition partners take strong exception to Kamaal's tongue wagging | | Bashir Assad JAMMU, Feb 20: Notwithstanding series of verbal spats between National Conference and Congress leaders during last couple of years and the subsequent intervention by the leadership from both sides to douse the flames and keep coalition going which was followed by a complete truce during the recent elections to the 8 reserved seats of Upper House, the Congress party has accused NC of playing politics of deceit. Taking strong exception to NC additional general secretary, Dr. Mustafa Kamaal's anti-Congress stance a senior leader of State Congress today told Early Times that those who blame Congress of betrayal should recall that in 1965 the National Conference merged with the Indian National Congress and became the Jammu and Kashmir branch of the Congress Party just for the lust of power. "Sheikh Abdullah's splinter Plebiscite Front faction later appropriated the name of the original party when Abdullah was allowed to return to power in February 1975 after striking a deal with the Congress Government at Centre," the senior Congress leader said. He said in 1987 State Assembly elections, NC, which formed an alliance with the Congress Party, won the majority and Dr Farooq Abdullah again became the Chief Minister. 'In December 2008 State Assembly elections, no single party was able to get the majority. The NC led by Omar Abdullah emerged as a single largest party, winning 28 seats. After the elections, on December 30, 2008 the JKNC formed an alliance with the Congress Party which had won 17 seats. Omar Abdullah became the Chief Minister of this coalition Government on January 5, 2009, said the Congress leader. The Congress leader said the National Conference was hanging on to us and not Congress on to NC as alleged by Dr. Kamaal. He said that history was witness to the fact that NC rose to the power corridors because of Congress. "Why that party could not form a Government in 2002 and how was it that Omar Abdullah became the Chief Minister in 2008," Congress leader questioned adding that people know where does NC stand. Pertinently Dr. Kamaal had said in the past that it was NC that resurrected Congress in Kashmir. "The present coalition is the best of a bad bargain," he had told a vernacular daily. "The fact of the matter is that Congress is hanging on to us. NC is a veteran party of the State," Kamaal was quoted as having said. Kamal had also said that the coalition was floating on uneasy waters. Breaking silence on Kamaal's Congress bashing, the veteran Congress leader said that such utterances from NC were unfortunate and against the spirit with which AICC president Sonia Gandhi handed over the reigns of power in Jammu and Kashmir to Omar Abdullah. While referring to various developments during last two or three years, the veteran Congressman alleged that NC was misleading people on various issues and try to led astray young generation by playing politics of falsehood besmearing the historical facts. |
