40, 000 books missing from JK libraries | `Publish names of erring borrowers, bureaucrats' | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 20: Most of the Government libraries in the State fail to cater to the needs of the students, scholars and researchers. According to rough estimates around 40,000 books are missing from the State libraries. An official in Srinagar's Government library, Karan Nagar made a startling revelation. "Thousands of important books on history, culture and other subjects have been taken by bureaucrats. The books have not been returned", he said. He said while students and other category of people showed prudence and returned the books sooner or later; the bureaucrats treated the valuable books as their personal property. The official who has served in various libraries in Jammu and Ladakh said the condition was no better there. According to him, around 40,000 books are missing from the libraries. "During the turmoil in Kashmir, thousands of books were stolen with the connivance of the staffers", he said. The concerned citizens have urged the Government to launch a recovery drive. "The drive has to be a serious effort. It must be on the pattern of JK Bank loan recovery drive", they suggested. Fortunately, the libraries have the names and other details of the borrowers. "Put them on notice and then publish their names in local newspapers", a scholar from Kashmir University said adding, "a book owned by library is a national asset. Nobody should be allowed to steal or retain it beyond the prescribed period." Repeated attempts to contact the concerned officials went in vain. |
