| Trade unions' strike evokes partial response in Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 20 : The two-day nationwide strike called by major trade unions evoked partial response in Jammu Wednesday as majority of private and commercial vehicles plied on roads and shops and other business establishments remained open in the city. However, all the major banks in Jammu, except the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, observed the strike. Although there was no major drop in the number of vehicles covering short distances in the city, long-distance commuters arriving at the Jammu railway station had to wait for longer than usual for mini-buses and taxis, some of which remained off road. Coolies and some private taxi owners at the station too joined the strike. The Punjab National Bank (PNB) Staff Union today staged protest demonstration in front of PNB Shalimar in favor of early redressal of their demands concerning with the bank employees. Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary Com. Malkeet Singh criticized the anti labour and anti-workmen policies of Central government. Others who spoke on the occasion include Com. Rakesh Chouhan (President) and Com. Kuldeep Gupta (Astt. Gen. Secretary). As a part of the country wide general strike by Central Trade Unions, Federations and Associations, the work in all insurance offices remained totally paralyzed as the insurance employees under the banner of All India Insurance Employees Association also joined the stir. Addressing the gathering, Com. Pawan Gupta said that it has been nearly 21 years that the reform process has started and during these long years the gap between the rich and poor has increased. The employees will take a joint rally of CITU, AITUC, INTUC and others tomorrow which will culminate at Indira Chowk. Income Tax Employees Federation, Jammu Unit too observed the strike on first day in support of their pending 15 points charter of demands. President Vinod Sharma and Secretary Parveen Khajuria on the occasion highlighted the demands. The nationwide strike has been called jointly by unions like the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) and other such central organizations in support of their charter of demands. |
