Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 20 : A rumour mill has begun working overnight to spread a word that Congress leaders were conspiring against their own party and making efforts to come up with third front.
According to a news gathering agency CNS, a meeting was held at the residence of ex-Minister Gulchain Singh Charak which was attended by several Congress leaders. It maintains that the meeting resolved to constitute third front within Congress merely to prevent alliance with National Conference (NC) during the 2014 assembly elections.
The front, according to CNS would neither align with JKPCC President's group nor work alongside Ghulam Nabi Azad.
The agency has said that the meeting was attended by dozens of Congress Ministers and leaders. Confirming the development, Charak said that dozens of Senior Congress leaders including Abdul Gani Vakil, Suman Bhagat, Jugal Kishore and Vinod Sharma visited his residence while adding that there was no meeting at all about any front.
He told CNS that majority of Congress leaders were not in favour of alliance with National Conference in the 2014 assembly elections. However, some senior Congress leader and former Minister who, according to CNS was present in the meeting confirmed this development and said that third Front will work on the pattern of Azad and Soz group but will have a distinct identity.
"Senior Congress leaders are being ignored in Jammu and Kashmir. Factionalism has marred the leaders. Soz and Azad groups are hell bent to tarnish image of Congress and in a way, these groups have brought Congress on the verge of extinction in Jammu and Kashmir. Our third front which will start functioning within a week's time will pursue party agenda in letter and spirit and will bring all the leaders under one roof in the state," he said.
Confirming this report, Senior Congress leader, Gulchain Singh Charak said that dozens of Congress leaders visited his Delhi residence a few days ago. "State Congress leaders don't want any alliance with National Conference and there is a growing feeling that NC is hell bent to tarnish the image of the Congress in the state," Charak said and added that Congress has constituted a high level committee to look into the matter. He however declined to comment on the formation of third front but asserted that lobbies are proving counterproductive for the Congress.
However, lashing at those Congress leaders who are mulling to form Third Front in Jammu and Kashmir, State Congress president Professor Saif-u-Din Soz said that no genuine Congress leader wants divisions and fractions in the party. "If what you are saying is true, then the party would see what action is to be taken against these so-called leaders. Congress is united and there is no need to worry about any front. Be it third, fourth or fifth front," said Soz.
