| Mercury improved; respite from cold in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Feb 20 : As the 20-day-long Chalai Khurd ended recently, people in the Kashmir Valley had a respite from cold weather with further improvement in the temperature while cold wave continued in Ladakh region, which remained cut off from the rest of the state from December last year. A Met department spokesman said weather will remain dry in the Valley during the next 24 hours. The maximum and the minimum temperature will remain above normal. Minimum temperature improved further in Srinagar, settling at 1.2 degrees Celsius. Yesterday the mercury was recorded at 0.6 degrees, he said. Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, Kokernag in south valley and Kupwara in north Kashmir also witnessed an increase in the temperature. Though world famous ski resort of Gulmarg also witnessed an improvement in night temperature, it was still below the freezing point. The minimum was minus 6.7 degrees against yesterday's minus 8 degrees, he added. There was also considerable improvement in the temperature of Pahalgam where the minimum was recorded at minus 0.8 degrees, six notches above normal than that of yesterday. Kargil remained the coldest place in Ladakh region with minus 13 degrees minimum temperature. However, there was a drop of a notch since yesterday. It was minus 10.8 degrees in Leh against yesterday's minus 11 degrees, the spokesman added. |
