Jammu, Mar 15: A Die Hard soldier and a associate of Brig Rajinder Singh (Saviouyr of Uri), Honorary Captain Barita Ram Sharma, passed away here last night in Bishnah area of Jammu. His last rites were performed at a solemn ceremony in his native village in Bishnah and people from different walks of life, close relatives and large number of ex-servicemen joined the funeral procession to pay last tributes to the veteran soldier. He passed away after having dinner around 10.30 pm. Honorary Captain Barita Ram Sharma retired from services in 1968 after giving a befitting challenge under the command of Brig Rajinder Singh and had survived the invasion by raiders in Kashmir valley. He till date had been a source of inspiration to the new generation in Jammu for living an active life. Pertinently in his last interview veteran soldier Barita Ram Sharma had evoked from his cherished memories that as the lady luck had smiled upon him and gave a privileged to work under the command of Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal popularly known as Saviour of Uri for saving Uri from being captured by Pak raiders in 26 Oct 1947(who was awarded the Mahavir Chakra posthumously for his exemplary valour). Recalling from his past, he had said, "the last command from his commander, Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal still echoes to him - Blast the Uri bridge to prevent rapid advance of invaders and Pakistani army regulars. "It was October 24, 1947 when I reached Uri from Srinagar, my commander ordered me to blast the Uri bridge without losing much time as raiders were advancing fast. The strategic decision to blast the Uri bridge is considered masterstroke as it gave enough time to Maharaja Hari Singh to arrange reinforcements from New Delhi and Kashmir was saved, he had told. Here it merits to mention that Capt (Hony) Brita Ram Sharma had also earned the rare distinction of working as instructor in Military Training School Mhow under the command of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
