ET Plus Report JAMMU, Mar 15: Omar Abdullah at the fag end of his political tenure as a Chief Minister is acting more like a provincial leader rather than being a head of the State. Five CRPF personnel laid down their lies. They were send without arms as Omar Abdullah had been consistently asking security forces to exercise maximum restrain and not resort to firing. They were also send without arms because the State Government felt that guns could invite sharp reactions from the protestors. As a CM it was the duty of Omar Abdullah to attend the wreath lying ceremony. It is a common practice and a Standing Operating Procedure in politics as a democratically elected leader represent the people across the divide. But he didn't. According to sources, he was annoyed because a youth, who was believed to be supporter of National Conference and close to Speaker Mubarak Gul had died in alleged firing by the CRPF. National Conference provincial president (Kashmir) Nasir Aslam Wani, who is considered close to him, has termed it cold blooded murder. Though the party hadn't used such remarks for the death of CRFP personnel. Going by this chain of event, Omar who had called Guru Sahib, might have in his understandings calculated that his presence at the wreath lying ceremony might cost him politically especially from hard line constituency which is trying to assuage and which he is building in a calibrated manner. However, when security personnel protested he dashed to the airport just as symbolic gesture rather than for the feelings. Omar who broke while informing the House about the death of a youth in alleged Army firing, deemed it not fit to shed tears for soldiers, who are sacrificing their lives to keep him secure. It shows that paranoia that has crept in the mind of the Chief Minister, who might be feeling politically comfortable in the disturbances. Such, plebeian and pedestrian mindset is reflective of a street or provincial leader but not of CM. |
