Bemina attack blasts nurtured security myth

srinagar, Mar 15: The recent militant attack in which heavily armed fidayeen stormed a paramilitary CRPF camp, killing five jawans and injuring six others in Bemina here has sent the security apparatus in the Valley into tizzy.
After years of relative calm, Wednesday's fidayeen attack has shown that militancy has returned to Valley with full force. Bemina attack follows a succession of attacks across the Valley, particularly in Sopore and Kupwara of north Kashmir which have emerged as the hub of the militant activities over the years.
"Militants are back in command and are striking at will. By carrying a deadly attack in the heart of the city they have succeeded in creating an impression of being all over and broken a great psychological barrier. Suddenly, like heydays of militancy nothing seems to be out of bounds for them," a senior police officer wishing anonymity told Early Time Plus.
This militant resurgence has upset many an assiduously nurtured security myth in Valley. And the greatest of these pertains to the security establishment in the State which claimed that near disappearance of militancy in the Valley over the past some years was an outcome of their painstaking efforts.
Security agencies are on tenterhooks as the latest attack can be the first of the series.
Highly placed police sources said Pakistan based militant outfits like Lashkar-e-Toiba were planning to carry out more fidayeen attacks in the Valley in coming days to avenge the hanging of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru.
"Abu Talah, the Lashkar militant from Multan Pakistan who was arrested by the police on Thursday in Srinagar was part of the group of nine militants who had infiltrated into Kashmir recently to carry out fidayeen attacks to avenge Guru's hanging," they said.
While two of the militants were killed in Bemina attack and another was arrested last evening, six are still roaming free which has sent the security agencies to tenterhooks.
"We are trying to establish whether Bemina attack had any link with Guru's hanging or not. It is difficult to comment on this issue at the moment. But that angle can't be ruled out also," a senior police officer said.
Immediately after the hanging of Guru in Tihar jail last month anti-India militant groups in Pakistan like Lashkar, Jaish-e-Mohammad and United Jihad Council had reportedly vowed to take revenge for the execution and step up their "Jihad" in Jammu and Kashmir.
