Srinagar, Mar 15: Curfew continued for the second consecutive day today across Kashmir as Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani was taken into custody for defying restrictions. The government also booked Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chairman, Shabir Shah under Public Safety Act (PSA).
The indefinite curfew imposed in Srinagar and other major towns of Kashmir on Thursday is continuing for second day today.
Heavy deployment of Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was put into place to thwart possible protests after congregational prayers. The Majlis-e-Mushawarat had called for protests after prayers.
The curfew was imposed across the Valley on Thursday following a Fidayeen attack at Bemina and killing of a civilian at Saidpora in old city.
Pertinently, Valley has been witnessing frequent shutdowns and curfews since the day Muhammad Afzal Guru was hanged in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 9.
SSP Srinagar, Ashiq Bukhari told Early Time Plus that Srinagar city remained peaceful throughout the day and there were no reports of people defying curfew from any area.
Bukhari said that people were allowed to offer Friday prayers in local mosques and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere during or after the prayers. Bukhari said the restriction will continue in Down Town area tomorrow while there will be no restriction in other parts of capital city by Saturday.
In North Kashmir’s Sopore town some incidents of stone pelting were reported in some areas of the town after Friday prayers. SP Sopore, Imtiyaz Ahmad told Early Time Plus that barring an insignificant incident of stone throwing in one Mohallah, the town was completely peaceful.
He said there will be no curfew tomorrow in the town.
Strict restrictions were put in place in South Kashmir’s Anantnag Kulgam, Shopaian and Pulwama district headquarters and many other sensitive towns, however, people were allowed to offer Friday prayers in local mosques during which the situation remained peaceful.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Dr Asgar Samoon on Friday said that curfew would be lifted from most parts of the city on Saturday.
However, some areas of old city would remain under curfew.
Samoon said the situation remained peaceful throughout the Valley on Friday and as such they have decided to lift the curfew on Saturday from most areas, but a few areas of old city would remain under curfew as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile authorities have booked the chairman of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) Shabir Ahmed Shah under Public Safety Act, sources said, adding that Shah has been shifted to Kot Balwal Jail.
Police on Friday arrested Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani outside his residence and foiled his attempt to visit the family of Mohammad Afzal Guru.
Defying curfew restrictions and his house arrest, as Geelani stepped outside his home a contingent of police already present there detained him and whisked him away in a police vehicle.
Geelani is currently under detention in police station Humhama.
He had earlier announced to offer Friday prayers in Sopore and was also expected to visit the families of Afzal Guru and other youth killed in Watergam and Baramulla recently.
