| Special Sub Plan', political reservation for OBC demanded | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 21: Vice Chairman, State Advisory Board for the Welfare and Development of Other Backward Classes, Kuldeep Raj Verma today demanded sanctioning of special Sub-Plan for OBC community in Jammu and Kashmir. This demand was raised in a memorandum which Verma presented before AICC General Secretary and Incharge of J&K Ambika Soni. Verma said that the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people have been given special sub plan but the OBC people have been ignored. He demanded an extensive sub plan which shall be sanctioned for their overall development. The Vice Chairman further demanded enhancement of reservation in Jammu and Kashmir at par with other States. According to the caste based census of 1931, the population of OBC was more than 35 percent but only 2 percent reservation has been given to them by the State Government on nomenclature of other social castes. "This is a great injustice and needs to be given reservation at par with the Central Government i.e. 27 percent so that these poor and deserving people could also be benefited," he added. Regarding political reservation, Verma demanded reservation in both the houses of the Legislative Assembly. "There is no representation from OBC in either of the Houses in the State Legislature although they constitute more than one-fourth of the total population of Jammu and Kashmir," he added in the memorandum. Expressing concern, he said that the Government has provided reservation to SC, ST and women in Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Municipal Committees and in Panchayats but no reservation has been kept for OBC in these institutions. |
