Separatist sponsored strikes losing relevance in Kashmir | | | Majid Ahmad
Srinagar, Sept 21: The strikes sponsored by separatists are fast losing their relevance in Kashmir. The timid response these strike calls evoke proves this. Hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for a march to south Kashmir's Shopian town to protest against the killing of four persons in CRPF firing recently. But, the call for a public march to Shopian town was met with a surprisingly tepid response. The day passed off just like any other day in Kashmir. Shops, business establishments were open, schools and colleges functioned normally. Similar was the response of people on moderate Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's Friday's call for protest march to Shopian. The latest strike call on Saturday by Geelani evoked lukewarm response in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley. Thousands of job aspirants who had to appear in the written test conducted by Services Selection Board (SSB) reached the exam venues on time as government this time decided not to postpone the exams. "It is a good sign from the government as it shouldn't budge before separatists. They have ruined the economy and education sector in Kashmir in the last 23 years by calling unnecessary strikes. Time has come when people should refuse to follow their diktats," said, Abid, a job aspirant who had to appear in the test today. "Hundreds of days of work has been lost in the past two decades due to the strikes. It has never been able to attract international attention towards Kashmir. How many times due to strikes international human rights organizations have taken cognizance of any Human Rights violation and pressurized New Delhi to be cautious?," he asked. A political anyalyst while commenting on strikes said these have always remained localized to a few localities of Srinagar and other towns. "Strikes have miserably failed to achieve their objective and it is only depriving daily wagers of their earning," he added. With Parliament and Assembly elections due to be held in state next year, the separatists are expected to create more trouble in the Valley by calling strikes and protests marches. |
