Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 21: From the time Narendra Modi was appointed as Chief of the BJP's campaign committee for the next Lok Sabha election upto the period he was declared the party's Prime Ministerial candidate,Modi has been in the news for all the good and bad reasons.Initially he raised a storm within the BJP and after being selected as the Prime Ministerial candidate Modi has given sleepless nights to the Congress,to the JD(U) and those in the Congress bandwagon.
Though the level of opposition to his being declared as the BJP's PM candidate within the saffron parivaar has started going down, the sense and spirit of discomfiture within the Congress and its allies has been rising to new level.
Being a great and effective orator Modi has shown great capacity for organizational work which has enabled him to win the Assembly election in Gujarat since 2001.And what seems to cause panic among the Congress and and its allies is the fact that Modi has weathered the 2002 communal riots storm and series of latest press statements and media interviews of senior muslim leaders clearly indicate that the minority community has no grudge against the strong man of Gujarat. It may be a surprise only for the Congress and its allies when reminded that a sizeable section of muslims have been voting for Modi and his BJP in Gujarat since 2007 onwards. In fact this is the main worry for the Congress, its allies and the JD (U) that have been banking on the support from the muslim minorities. The latest views from senior muslim leaders, including religious leaders,in Gujarat indicate that a section of muslim voters in various states may not hesitate voting for the BJP.And rightly the BJP leadership has initiated measures for wooing muslims which could help Modi to perform a miracle for the BJP by enabling it to cross the magic figure of 272 in the next Lok Sabha elections.
Now that the Assembly elections in five states are to be held during the current year the poll results from these states may reflect Modi's magic if the BJP wins from three out of five states.Once that happened not a soul within the BJP may have any reservation against Modi having been declared as the BJP's PM candidate.
Till the Assembly election in fives states and the Lok Sabha poll, due next year, are completed Modi is bound to be no less than an obsession for the Congress and its allies. And the only trick the Congress is playing to malign Modi's name is to rake up the 11-year old communal riots in Gujarat while trying to put a heavy lid on communal riots in Delhi in 1984 and in other Congress ruled states from time to time.
What is peculiar about Gujarat and about some of the Congress ruled states is that Gujarat, after 2002 communal riots, has not witnessed even a single incident of communal tension whereas communal riots,in one form or the other, have been repeated in some congress ruled states.
And the Congress is galvanizing all the resources and talent, which is at its disposal,to denigrade Modi.and the latest to spit venom against Narendra Modi is a prominent writer in Karnataka,U.R.Ananthamurthy.He has stated that Modi was "unfit for leading the country.Even as critical remarks against Narendra Modi by Kannada writer U.R. Ananthamurthy triggered a barrage of angry responses by the BJP, the Jnanpeeth-awardee reiterated his position that Gujarat Chief Minister and the party's prime ministerial candidate was "unfit" to lead the country.
Prof. Ananthamurthy has said that he could not think of living in a country led by Modi. This led to angry responses from BJP leaders in Karnataka. BJP spokesperson Ayanur Manjunath had gone to the extent of comparing him to Bollywood actor Poonam Pandey who declared that she would strip if the Indian team won the 2011 World Cup. When the Kanada writer was reminded about him being compared to sexy Poonam Pandey Prof. Ananthamurthy said that there were no surprises in the BJP's reaction. "It is as expected, given their insecurities," he said, adding that it added to his fears that there would be no room for freedom of expression if the party voted to rule the county. He described Modi as a "bully" who created fear and inspired cowardice.
BJP leaders have berated Ananthamurthy for being "dishonest" in his views on Modi.Which side may emerge stronger one thing is certain that Modi is bound to hog limelight during the entire election period. And his stature may assume bigger dimensions with the Congress and its allies targeting Modi with their verbal shots.
