Poverty affects childhood of minors, earning for family is priority

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 21: Children are the future of the nation. But due to poverty, many poor children are forced to work to earn for their family even if they are below 16 years of age. The state government is not showing any keen interest in giving them proper education and taking them out of their "burdened childhood."
These minors either work as part time basis or full time basis, either forced by their families to work or working on their own fill to earn for their families. They know that they have to work in order to fulfill their family needs so without any second thought in their minds they say 'yes' to it.
As child labor is also banned in India but poverty has struck the families of these minors and they call it their 'fate', they work to earn for their families. The state government should take out certain schemes for these children so that they can taste the goodness of their childhood and can study without any burden to make their future bright.
Sonu who is just 12 years old, a maize seller at Bakshi Nagar said, "We are three brothers, we all three work time to time here at this stall so that our family expenses can be fulfilled easily. I besides selling maizes also study. I study in class 10th and work part time here. My two other brothers also work here. I earn Rs. 200 per day only and with this much amount I fulfill the family's needs. My father also sometimes contributes to this work.
"Government should take out certain schemes to help poverty struck children like us so that we can taste the merriment of our childhood days," he further added.
Children below 16 years of age are prohibited legally by the government of India to work but this law is not being applicable in Jammu city as many children who are below this age are seen working on tea stalls, cigarette shops, opt for begging and more. In many homes they are working as part time servants also.
Another kid Kunal , who is 14 years old, working at food stall said, "I have working here since five years. I have to earn for my family, so I work. I even don't get time to study so I stopped going school. I know this is my fate and government does not pay serious attention to children like us."
Official of the Social Welfare board said, "Children are forced to work in order to earn for their family and their childhood days get affected with it. We are doing our part in one way or the other by helping them to enjoy their childhood days without any burden of work. Our board works for these children by providing them with free nutrition from the money which comes from the government."
"We also do time to time counseling of these children and their parents so that the parents do their job of earning well without interfering in their child's education and child can be free from any burden of work."
