| Transporters- Passengers face off over 40 pc fare hike | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 29 : All Jammu and Kashmir Transport Welfare Association have decided to stay off road on Monday, demanding 40 percent hike in passenger fare. But all Jammu Passengers Association, an organization of passengers of the state, under the leadership of its president R. C. Sharma severely condemned the decision taken by All J&K Transport Welfare Association for observing the Chakka Jam on September 30 and described the strike as illegal, unethical and undemocratic. All the transporters of Jammu province with the consultation of transporters of Kashmir province decided to go on one day strike on September 30. Transporters said that no passenger transport vehicles will be allowed to ply on the road from Lakhanpur to Srinagar and if the demands are not fulfilled within one week's time then they will go in for an indefinite strike. "The central government is increasing the rates of the Petroleum Products and rates of Diesel increased Rs.5.50 per liter and Petrol Rs.15 per liter in last 6-7 months and IRDA has also increased the rates of third party insurance from April this year, it has become difficult to survive for a transporter here," said Pritam Singh transporter. "We have approached various times to state government for revision of fare but nothing has been done, we demands that the fare should be increased by 40percent," he added. Meanwhile, R C Sharma said that government has issued the passengers' permit to the transporters for the convenience of the people but the transporters are ignoring spirit of the purpose and intentionally teasing the general masses. He asked the government to take stern action against those who are hell bent to disturb the people. He further asked the government and concerned authorities to consider all the basic facts before hiking the fare and added that presently there is no need of hike in passenger fares. Mentioning about the transporters attitude towards the passengers, he said that transporters have never taken the care of passengers and seems to be fleecing the passengers and now again they are raising the voice for hike in fare. He said, "Hike in fare should be in consistent with the hike of diesel and not more than percentage of diesel. " He also asked the government to make the transporters accountable to the public and administration, and put more restrictions on the transporters so that they may serve the people and not rule the people. Referring to the present fare, he said that it is already in excess and there is no need of hike in any fare at any point. Expressing surprise over the claim made by the transporters about losses in transport, he said the numbers of passenger vehicles are increasing day by day and there is no reason that transporters are facing loss. He also asked the authorities to fix half fare for those passengers, who travel without seat or in standing position to avoid the overloading as the menace of overloading is increasing day by day. |
