| Samba militancy victims expose Govt claims | | Where have Rs 16 lakh gone? | | Sumit Sharma
Jammu, Sept 29: The kith and kin of the people who fell to militant attacks on May 11, 2008 have been moving from pillar to post to get the exgratia that was announced by the state government immediately after the attack. However, five years down the line, they continue to move from office to office without results. The victims of the Samba militant attack were subject to cruel joke at the hand of government as after running pillar to post, they got nothing, in the name of compensation as announced by the government at that time. Deceased Shashi Bala's kin Vicky said that he had been scaling the road from his residence at Kalimandi to DC office, Samba and Divisional Commissioner Office, Jammu for the last five years and now he has been asked that his family is not entitled to compensation as he has managed government job. He said that he managed government job after long gap of the incident on his own merit and not government courtesy. He sought explanation from government about Rs 16 lakh which state government received from the centre government in the name of compensation to the kin of the four persons died in the militant attack. He said that he had been bearing expenses of medicines for his sister who received bullet injuries, though; he was asked that government would bear the same. Kartar Singh and Dwarka Nath, the relatives of those who were killed by militants alleged that earlier the files regarding ex gratia and relief submitted to DC Samba office were misplaced thrice in spite of regular touch to the concerned office. Finally fourth time when the files were dispatched to the Divisional Commissioner Office, Jammu, the same tragedy took place here also. Later they were asked to prepare fresh files as earlier had been misplaced. The repeatedly incidents of misplacement of files in the government offices also raised suspicion on the sincerity of the white colar babus. Their tale of woe did not end here. The transparency of government officials once again came under scanner when they alleged that they got only Rs 5,000 out of Red Cross Fund while the ten DC Samba Sourabh Bhagat announced Rs one lakh as ex-gratia to the next of kin of those killed in the militant attack as sanctioned by government. The officer also gave a cheque of Rs 10,000 as interim relief to one Suresh Singh, whose house was damaged badly as militants had taken shelter there. Besides distributing essential commodities to the affected families, Bhagat also asked officials to prepare relief cases immediately and also constituted a committee to assess the damages suffered by the locals. The incident occurred on 11 May 2008 when some militant entered into the house of International Democratic Party (IDP) chairman and social worker Hoshiar Singh at about 5:30 and showered bullets at him and his wife Shashi Bala. Both of them died on the spot. The militants also showered bullets on Hoshiar's daughter Bindu Pathania and her mother in law Darshana Dewi of Amritsar. Both received bullet injuries and till date are bed ridden. The callous attitude of the government has also brought defame from Punjab government. The militants then entered into the residence of one Suresh Kumar at Kaili Mandi.Where in the fierce encounter a photo journalist Ashok Sodi died while performing duty. Later all the militants were killed. Earlier, militants entered into the residence of Dawarka Nath where her wife Madhu Balla dared them and died on receiving a bullet. |
