| BJP's baffling silence over Omar Abdullah's statement on accession | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 29: The BJP stands for complete integration of J&K State with the rest of the country. It is also a strong votary for the abrogation of article 370 of constitution of India that gives a special status to J&K. State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently told a delegation of EU ambassadors that the accession of J&K to India was based only on for subjects, foreign affairs, defence, currency and communication. What Omar Abdullah said has also been said in the past by his grandfather and father. While most probably Omar's grandfather believed for many years after 1947, at least till he remained in jail after 1953, that the accession to India was a necessity for him to replace Maharaja Hari Singh as the generation next 'Maharaja of J&K', his son and grandson have used this assertion only as a political compulsion. Former Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah had realized the 'dangers' of playing the political double game when the centre engineered and masterminded his ouster in 1984, but is Omar Abdullah, who was once the darling of the BJP during the NDA rule, been asserting the 'conditionality' of J&K's accession to India purely as political expediency? Does he seriously believe J&K needs to remain in India by remaining out of it? Perhaps Omar Abdullah believes asserting the 'conditionality of accession' came handy during the 2010 agitation in the Valley. Now that the State is readying itself for 2014 elections, the NC rhetoric against India and accession is going to get stronger. What shocks the people of the State and also millions of others in the rest of the country is why the BJP has been keeping silent over Omar's assertion before the EU delegation during an interaction with them? Does the BJP silence indicate a change in its policy towards the accession of J&K with India or does the party believe taking the NC head-on ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha elections might cost them a small ally in the future? Is political expediency as important and crucial for the BJP that it takes precedent over national interest? |
