EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 29: Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu celebrated World Heart Day under the theme of "Take the road to aHealthy Heart." On the occasion, a seminar was organized regarding "CAD in Indians." Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sushil Sharma said that claiming 17.3 million lives per year, cardiovascular disease, which comprises of heart disease and stroke, is the number one killer worldwide. It claims more than the total deaths (3.86 million deaths per year) due to malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis put together. In fact, the risk for heart disease is found to be higher in Indians than that in U.S. and Western Europe as India is already heading towards being the diabetic capital of the world. Dr. Sushil also utilized this opportunity to address certain myths associated with heart diseases and the common risk factors of coronary artery disease are diabetes , hypertension, abnormal lipids, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity which can be modified the other factors that cannot be controlled are family history ,genetic and age. He said, "It is a myth that cardiovascular disease mostly affects males. In fact, heart disease is the reason for 1 in 3 female deaths each year. It's my urge to all Indian females that in their daily rush when they are being ideal wives and mothers, please take at least a moment for yourself and listen to your own heart. After all, health of the entire family depends on you." Dr. Sushil Sharma further added, "In fact not only adults, in today's world, our children are also at increased risk of heart disease. So there is no age or gender bar to develop cardiovascular disease." Dr Shashi Gupta Principal GMC, Jammu and Dr Mohan Lal Sr. cardiologist and former HOD Deptt. of Cardiology GMC Jammu also spoke on the occasion. The programme was attended by Heads of different Departments and Faculty members of GMC Jammu Graduates and post graduates and paramedical staff of the CCU Cath Lab.
