| Employees’ issue comes up for discussion in Assembly | | Tarigami condemns invoking ESMO against employees | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 4: The issue of deadlock between the government employees and the state government came up for discussion during the question hour of the Assembly with some of the members raising their concern over the stalemate. Raising the issue MLA Kulgam and state secretary CPI (M) Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami said that the invocation of Essential Services Maintenance Ordinance (ESMO) against the state government employees is highly regrettable. Tarigami said that state government should inform the house about the fate of talks held with government employees held last week. "What was the need for state government to invoke ESMO against its own government employees? The ESMO was at its back burner and that too has been invoked by the state government. The members have a right to know about the fate of negotiations carried out by the government with the government employees," said Tarigami. MLA Kulgam also expressed his disappointment over the failure of talks between the two sides and said that people have been kept hostage due to the strike carried out by government employees. He said responsibility needs to be fixed so that there is some relief for the masses and their daily problems get solved. Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta of Bharatiya Janta Party also talked about the issue of employees and said that government should come out with the real facts about the current position vis-à-vis the government employees and their demands. Gupta said that there is no need to raise retirement age from 58 to 60 years adding that this would compound problems of unemployment in the state. "The government should carry out with meaningful negotiations with the employees so that there is some end to the stalemate. The employees belong to this state and as such it is important that their demands are looked into by the government with an open mind. However, the retirement age should not be raised as it would lead to more problems on account of unemployment," said Gupta. The BJP MLA said that health and medical education minister, Taj Mohi-ud-din and consumer affairs and public distribution department, Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan give statements outside the house thus breaching the rules and regulations of parliamentary democracy. On this speaker Ramzan went up and said that he never gave any statement outside the house. Speaker Mubarak Gul said that no minister should issue a policy statement outside the legislative assembly. The issue came up for discussion during the zero hour and Abdul Rehman Veeri of Peoples Democratic Party expressed concern that employees are on war path with the state government. Veeri also demanded that government should take the issue serious so that there is some solution thus leading to relief for the people.
