Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 4: It is official now. Hindu Shrines and religious Bill is not in the business agenda of ongoing Autumn session of Assembly in Srinagar. Ironical aspect of the Bill is that even though the Select Committee which was set up earlier this year for discussing certain areas of disagreement between members of various parties, is not only unanimous but keen for early passage of the bill to allow it to become a law for protection of the temples and shrines, the obstacles this time have been raised by various bodies, Dharmarath Trust being the main contender in not letting the places of worship being taken care of by it to come under the purview of the Bill.
Sources said the Select Committee which held meetings during the past few months held some meaningful discussions and deliberated upon some crucial aspects on which members of ruling NC in particular had raised some objections during the Budget session in Jammu. Though there were certain areas where the members belonging to various parties differed but the panel having seasoned and experienced members on board had arrived at unanimity and there was consensus that the bill after incorporating suggestions that emerged during the course of discussions be passed during the Autumn session. However, that was not to be.
In its last meeting held on September 25, the Select Committee had called some representatives of few bodies which had raised objections and are simply resisting to be brought under the purview of the Bill. Sources said during the interaction with the members of the Select Committee, some bodies, mainly Dharmarth Trust as also some Sadhus in individual capacity and collectively strongly opposed to let some places to be brought under the purview of the legislation contending these were governed well by the existing management committees. Sources said were some representatives from Jammu as well who sought some religious places and temples not be included in the list. Sources said the arguments put forth by these bodies, which were contradictory and antagonizing with the spirit of the Bill created further confusion and a situation of dilemma , something which has stalled and stagnated the prospects of this piece of legislation
getting converted into a law which once enforced can stop ongoing vandalizing and loot of the property and sanctity of the religious places mainly in Kashmir Valley.
Sources further said while those in the forefront of the struggle for this Law to be enforced are looking at it resistance by vested interests for obvious reasons, there is more beyond that in what can be seen as political obstacles on the hind scene which prevented Select committee to formulate a final report. The last meeting of Select Committee on account of this confusing contentions and arguments remained inconclusive which is why it could not submit its report , which resulted in the Bill missing this session again for passage
