| Silence of Congress, Panthers Party intriguing | | Kishtwar Bandh | | Rustam JAMMU, Oct 4: The members of the minority community of Hindus today observed bandh in Kishtwar. The call for bandh was given by the Sanatan Dharam Sabha (SDS), a popular social organization of the minority community, and supported by many organizations belonging to the same community. The call for bandh was given following the shifting of Ajay Kumar from Kishtwar to Jammu Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. Ajay Kumar had sustained serious injuries, as he was allegedly tortured by certain members of the Special Investigating Team (SIT) for almost a week. The merciless beating of minor Ajay Kumar had created tensions in Kishtwar. The aggrieved and harassed people demanded action against the "guilty police officials" and blamed the DIG, DySP, Deputy Commissioner and a few others saying "they were biased, vindictive and communally motivated" and "they were harassing the innocent youth and forcing them to say what they wanted so that those resorted to violence on August 9 and attacked the members of the minority community could be saved and members of the minority community are booked and punished". The development in Kishtwar and the shifting of Ajay Kumar in a serious condition from Kishtwar shocked the people of Jammu, who had observed three-day-long massive bandh following the violence that gripped Kishtwar district on August 9. Ajay Kumar's mother Tara Devi and sister Bavita addressed reporters at the BJP headquarters on Thursday and narrated their woeful tale in the presence of three BJP leaders and demanded immediate action against the guilty police officials. The BJP shared the agony and grief of the harassed and persecuted family and threatened an agitation if the guilty officials were not booked. Paradoxically, the Congress, which calls itself secular and progressive, and the Panthers Party thought it politically prudent to remain indifferent. Neither any of the Congress leaders had spoken nor any of the Panthers Party leaders said a word of sympathy for Ajay Kumar and his family, which had been moving heaven and earth to seek justice. It appears that it is the vote-bank politics that barred the Congress and the Panthers Party from making common cause with the persecuted family. However, the silence of the Panthers Party was all the more intriguing because it had on occasions stood and fought for the right cause. As for the local Congress leaders, including its spokespersons, they rarely speak. They are so mortally afraid of the Congress high command. This is not the time for vote-bank politics; this is the time to come on one platform and fight out the communal elements wherever they are. It is the fundamental duty of political parties to say what is right and what is wrong and help the aggrieved to obtain justice. By remaining indifferent to the Ajay Kumar episode, the Congress and the Panthers Party have simply displayed their insensitivity. Such an approach on the part of the political parties is neither in their interest nor in the interest of the State. They must imitate their counterparts in Kashmir who always speak in one voice, although they operate from different platforms. |
