Early Times Report

Budgam, Oct 31: Taking a serious note of the illegal brick kilns operating in central Kashmir's Budgam district the Chief Secretary M I Khanday today directed the Deputy Commissioner Budgam to seal the illegal brick kilns in the district as soon as possible so that a tough message goes to mafia operating in the district .
Chief Secretary was addressing an extra ordinary meeting of district officers , top level officials from state administration and members of civil society in Budgam on Thursday. During the meeting some citizen activist and civil society members brought this matter related to operation of illegal brick kilns in the district and without waiting for a minute the CS directed DC Budgam Khursheed Ahmad Shah to close all the illegal brick kilns in the district .
According to reliable sources as many as twenty new brick kilns have been established in various parts of Budgam on Agricultural land (Aabi Awal) which is total violation of the Environmental and even brick kiln laws. " On one Government says that conversion of Agriculture into commercial hubs cannot be tolerated but on ground the situation is quite different in Budgam where there is mushroom growth of brick kilns " says Mohammad Ramzan Khan a local social activist .
Pertinent to mention that scores of brick kilns are operating in Budgam against the guidelines of Environmental & Land Revenue laws and in majority of cases no NOC has been provided by the State Pollution Control Board.
Sources say that a strong nexus has been operating in Budgam from decades and that is the reason that as many as 80 brick kilns are running in Budgam on agricultural land . The brick kiln owners not only run their illegal business but they do not abide by the norms set by the Government for selling the bricks. The rate fixed by the Government is not abided at all and bricks are sold Rs 1000 more per tipper and the administration is a mute spectator.
