| Congress on its way out in Delhi as well? | | Pre-poll survey | | Rustam
JAMMU, Oct 31: On October 28 and 29, the CSDS pre-poll survey conducted for IBN7 and THE WEEK magazine predicted a crushing defeat for the Congress and spectacular victories for the BJP in poll-bound crucial states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. The pre-poll survey said that while the BJP would return to power for the third time in a row in MP and Chhattisgarh, it would dislodge the Congress government in Rajasthan and break all the previous records. On October 30, the CSDS pre-poll survey, which was conducted between October 16 and 24 covering 28 assembly segments, predicted a doom for the Congress party. It said that the Congress will win 19 to 25 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly if elections are held now. Delhi has been under the Congress rule since 1998 with Sheila Dikshit as Chief Minister. The survey said that the Congress will not get more than 27 per cent votes. In 2008, the Congress had polled more than 40 per cent votes. As for the BJP, the pre-poll survey said that 22 to 28 seats and get 29 per cent of the total votes polled. In 2008, its vote share was more than 36 per cent. The pre-poll survey also said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will perform exceedingly well considering the fact that it was formed by Arvind Kejriwal only a few months ago. Kejriwal ditched Anna Hazare to fulfill his political ambitions. The survey said that the AAP will get 19 to 25 seats and as many as 28 per cent of the total votes polled. The survey was conducted at a time when the AAP had already started its poll campaign in a big way and the Congress and the BJP yet to start their campaign. The survey teams knew it well who will be the Chief Ministerial candidates of the Congress and the AAP. Sheila Dikshit is the Congress's undeclared Chief Ministerial candidate and Arvind Kejriwal the AAP's. The survey teams didn't know who will be the BJP's Chief Ministerial nominee. It was only on October 23, a day after the survey teams completed the survey that the BJP announced its Chief Ministerial candidate. Dr Harsh Vardhan, a soft-spoken and a person with clean image, who had proved his pro-people credentials as Health Minister in the Delhi government 15 years ago, was declared as the BJP Chief Ministerial candidate. It is obvious that the Harsh Vardhan factor was not taken into consideration by the survey teams and it was only natural. In any case, one thing is clear once more: The Congress's support-base is declining. Why? It is for the Congress to give a definite answer. |
