| What has golf given to JK? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 12: Even as the people across the state are out on streets protesting shortage of electricity, the authorities intend to have some fun by organizing a Golf tournament in the winter capital. Golf is a noble sport but very few people in the state opt for it. The golf players of the state can be counter on finger tips. Notwithstanding this, the authorities laid a number of golf courses and in the process vandalized the city forest in the summer capital which now hosts the so-called Royal Springs Golf Course. A scientist from US who visited the state in 2005 was shocked by the vandalization caused to the city forest. "This was the most important catchment area for Dal Lake. Now the doom of this beautiful lake is certain." He said adding "If you want to save the lake, vandalise the golf course in the same way the city forest was vandalized. Once it is done, the forest will revive on its own." This is what this game has done to the environment. The course has now become a pleasure house for the so-called elite of the state. As mentioned above this game has not and cannot contribute to the development of the state in any way notwithstanding the misconceived claims of the babus and the politicians. The authorities need to concentrate on the problems of the people. The people are not at all interested in golf or golf courses. They are interested in onions and tomatoes. Yes, sports are necessary but which sport do people of the state play? They play football and cricket. So why not promote these sports? |
