| KU study explodes myth of women empowerment | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 12: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah talked extensively about women empowerment while addressing a rally at Chenani yesterday. He said women constitute 50% population in the state and their holistic development is necessary to achieve the all-round development of the state. For Chief Minister's information the UMEED has failed to generate hopes among women and this has been reported by the media time and again. Similarly the Ma Tujay Salaam has also failed to help the pregnant women in any way. And as far as the social welfare department and its so-called welfare schemes are concerned, the less said the better. Recently the widow pension was enhanced by a few rupees. The amount that is now given to the destitute does not suffice them for the whole onth. There have been cases where the officials in the said department have demanded bribe to release the amount to the widows. Widows on the beneficiary list of the department rue the day when they got registered for the pension. "We are made to come to the department repeatedly. Sometimes we are made to wait in inclement weather," they have been telling the media. The Chief minister has miserably failed to check harassment of women at their working places. This has assumed alarming proportions and most of the victims do not report the harassment they undergo regularly for reasons known to the Chief Minister. A study onducted by a noted sociologist in the Kashmir university explodes the myth of women empowerment in the state. According to the survey, there has been an alarming increase in cases of rape and molestation in the state over the past few years. The study ponints out the failure of the government in implementing its own order on reservation of seats for women in passenger vehicles. The seats reserved for women are mostly occupied by the males and women are made to stand in the middle where molestation takes place. "Empowerment is directly linked to dignity. And when the dignity of women is violated in buses and public places, empowerment makes no sense," said a women rights activist. |
