Jammu, Dec 12: Gharana wetland at RS Pura near Jammu once again started chirping loud with thousands of migratory birds and interestingly a bar headed geese collared by the wild life department of the state in September this year at Ladakh is sighted at Gharana Wetland. Tahir Shawl, former wildlife wild life warden, who had started collaring bar headed geese, informed that one bar headed geese with the ribbon collared on its neck with the number K-24 has been seen at Gharana Wetland. He said that they had collared that Bar headed gees at Chushul, Ladhakh in September this year, to study the route of the bar headed geese. "We saw one bar headed geese with the collar of K-24, which we had tied at Ladakh in September this year," said Tahir Shawl. "It has showed that the bar headed geese, which is a migratory bird use to live at Ladakh during summers and comes at Jammu during summers," he added. Shawl also informed that on September 17, 2013, they had tied four collars to the bar headed gees, out of which two collars were tied with satellite transmitters, which shows the actual position of the bird. "Two bar headed gees, tied with Satellite transmitter collared are roaming in Himachal Pradesh and one collared bar headed geese is here at Jammu," said Shawl. The department had started the process of tying collars to Bar headed geese two years back, to know the positions and routes followed by the migratory birds. Some of the birds were tied with satellite transmitters to study the actual routes of the birds. Gharana is about 35 kilometers west of Jammu in R.S. Pura sector on Indo-Pak border. It has been notified as Important Bird Area (IBA) site. It was declared Reserve in 1981. About 2000 migratory birds have reached Gharana Wetland this year till now. |
