NC interested for pre-poll alliance, Cong not keen

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Jan 8: While the National Conference leadership is keen to finalize its pre-poll alliance with the Congress, leaders of the state unit of the Congress continue to weigh all pros and cons of pre-poll alliance with the NC. Party sources said that the state unit of the Congress is in no hurry to go in for a pre-poll alliance with the NC.
Sources said that since the Congress is keen to establish its foothold in the Kashmir valley by contesting at least one of the three Lok Sabha seats the party may not be able to do so if a pr e-poll alliance was forged with the NC. In support of its contention senior Congress leaders said that the NC had already announced to contest all the three Lok Sabha seats in the valley and for that it has even disclosed the names of its candidates. It is in this context that senior Congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, including Saif-ud-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad have been urging the party high command to allow the congress to go alone for the Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Reports said that the National Conference has made it clear that it will repeat its members on the three seats of Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla --- Farooq Abdullah, Mehboob Beigh and Sharifuddin Shariq, respectively. It is yet to decide on the three seats of Jammu, Udhampur and Ladakh.
The opposition PDP has disclosed the names of candidates for four of the six seats in the state. These include two each from the Valley and the Jammu region. It has nominated former minister Tariq Hameed Qarra for Srinagar and party president Mehbooba Mufti for Anantnag. Those from Jammu region include Yashpal for Jammu and Arshad Malik for the Udhampur constituency. It is yet to decide on Baramulla, having ruled out the candidature of its senior leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, Muzaffar Hussain Baig. The party may also field a candidate for the Ladakh constituency.
But those in the Congress, who favour a pre-poll with NC, say that the Congress may damage the PDP if it(Congress) fielded its candidates from two out of three Lok Sabha constituencies in the Kashmir valley. They added that for the Congress the atmospheres was not favourable within the valley and if it goes in for a pre-poll with the NC it could field its candidates from two seats of Jammu region and one from Ladakh.
Party sources said that the Congress high command may take the decision on whether the party should contest the Lok Sabha poll in Jammju and Kashmir in alliance with the NC or not by the middle of next month.
