| New administrative units further strain NC-Cong relations | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 8: National Conference and Congress relations have got further strained over the creation of new administrative units. Congress has said it cannot accept the dictates of the National Conference. The party has decided to communicate to the party high command over the issue. "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is pushing his agenda for more administrative units in the Valley. He has already decided on this issue but we are not going to take it hands down and will be communicating to the party high command over the issue," said a Congress minister wishing not to be named. Congress, which has major base in Jammu, feels that more administrative units are needed in Jammu rather than in Kashmir. In 2007 while eight districts were made, four each in Jammu and Kashmir, there was need for more districts in Jammu than in Kashmir. It has evoked resentment in the Jammu division. This time also party feels that if more administrative units are awarded to Kashmir, than in Jammu it could have political implications for the party especially when elections are due this year. "Omar wants to get a toe hold in the Valley. But in the process he is pushing Congress to the wall. The party is already facing the resurgent BJP with Modi at the helm. An issue which could accentuate the feeling of discrimination in Jammu would go against the party and it would be politically dangerous," said the leader. According to sources, the exercise for new units, set in motion by the Omar Abdullah has also caused resentment in his own party. Many senior NC leaders, including Ministers, have said that the way exercise is being done and promises are being made it could mar their political career. "NC is now luring PDP MLAs and leadership with new administrative units. But in the process damaging its own interest and cadre and it could be prove suicidal in the next Assembly elections," said a senior NC leader. |
