| Dormant Congress losing political space by the day | | Political scene of J&K | | Rustam
JAMMU, Jan 8: Jammu & Kashmir has been witnessing hectic political activities for quite sometime now. The NC, which has been in the driver's seat, has been using its official position to promote its agenda and retrieve the political space it lost over the period to the PDP, especially in Kashmir Valley, which is the core constituency of both these Kashmir-centric parties. The working president of the NC and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed the NC ministers and other legislators to undertake political activities not only in their own respective constituencies but beyond them to garner people's support for the party. Omar Abdullah himself is addressing public meetings at regular intervals. The PDP, which is the main opposition in the Valley, has been organizing public meetings since long not only in Kashmir but also in Jammu province. Infact, it has been conducting itself in a manner as if the Election Commission has announced the election schedule. Its leadership has been leaving no stone unturned to advocate and popularize its pro-self-rule philosophy as an alternative to the NC's greater autonomy doctrine. Besides, it has been consistently exposing what it calls the misdeeds and anti-people policies of the NC-Congress coalition government. So much so, it has started claiming that the PDP would not only emerge as the largest party in the upcoming elections but would also form government. The BJP, which was the fourth largest group in the Assembly, too, has started its campaign against its political rivals in right earnest. Its political rivals include the Congress, NC, PDP and the JKNPP. Of course, its arch rivals are the Congress and the JKNPP, as the support-base of these three formations is the same as far as Jammu province is concerned. The BJP has been organizing political activities on daily basis not only in the Jammu city but also outside. The visit of Narendra Modi to Jammu on December 1st has enthused the BJP cadres to the extent that they have started saying that the BJP would win a minimum of three Lok Sabha seats and over 30 Assembly seats and form the next government both at the Centre and in the state. The BJP headquarter in Jammu is abuzz with activities and senior BJP leaders from Delhi frequently visiting Jammu and other parts of the state, including Leh and Kargil. Similarly, the JKNPP leadership has become quite active at least in Ramnagar, Udhampur and to an extent in Samba and Vijaypur. It's only the Congress party that is devoid of any political activity. Infact, it has become dormant. The position for the Congress has turned so critical that hardly any Congress leader and worker visits the party headquarters in Jammu. The office bears a deserted look. Some of the Congress leaders and workers do visit the party office when the JKPCC chief or some other Senior Congress leader visits Jammu. Its spokesperson hardly speaks. And those in the Congress who sometimes speak say only one thing: Give support to the Congress which alone has the potential to remain in power and which believes in the principle of justice and equity. The other point that they make is that Congress is secular and the BJP is communal. It doesn't say anything about the ideologies of the Kashmir-based parties and the attitude of the people of Jammu and Ladakh towards these regressive ideologies. The fact of the matter is that the Congress in the state has gone totally demoralized and dormant and there appears none in the Congress who could inspire its cadres. And the result is that the Congress is losing its support-base by the day. If this trend continues for some more time, the Congress would suffer the worst ever defeat in the state like the Congress suffered in Delhi and Rajasthan where the party could win only about 10 per cent of the total seats out of 270. |
