| Gen VK Singh to appear before Privileges Committee of LC today | | House to summon him if he fails to turn up | | early times report Jammu, Jan 8: Former Army Chief General VK Singh has been asked to appear before the Privileges Committee of Legislative Council tomorrow to present his view point in defense with regard to statements he made last year with respect to Ministers in J&K that they have been receiving funds from Army from time to time. This is an opportunity given to General Singh to be heard personally by the Privileges Committee required as per the law. In case former Army Chief fails to turn up tomorrow, the Committee will summon him formally or proceed ahead with further course of action as mandated by the legal procedure in the matter. "The Legislative Council has not summoned him as yet.....it is only an opportunity of being heard tomorrow in person by the Privileges Committee wherein he can put case in his defense....it is for him to avail this opportunity or not", said Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Secretary of the Legislative Council while confirming that January 9 had been fixed the date for his personal hearing. However, as of now he has not confirmed whether he will come or not. The Secretary of the Upper House who is also holding the additional charge of Law Secretary said in case General Singh doesn't appear tomorrow, the Committee is left with two options in the matter. The panel will either proceed ahead without hearing him or issue a formal summon against him, he informed while speaking to ET. Pertinently, it was during last session that two members of the Legislative Council Ajay Sadhotra and Devinder Singh Rana had moved Privilege Motion against General Singh over the statement that Army has been giving money to ministers in J&K. Following this, the House set up a Privileges Committee in the matter which is headed by Jugal Kishore Sharma of Congress to investigate into the facts of the matter. It had taken cognizance of the reports that appeared in media with regard to allegations made by General VK Singh. The allegations had created political furore not only in J&K but also viewed seriously at the national level too. |
