Time for people of Kashmir to call separatists' bluff
Revolt in APHC-M

Neha

JAMMU, Jan 8: It's not only the APHC-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, APHC-G chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani, JKLF president Yasin Malik and J&K DFP leader Shabbir Ahmad Shah, who have been playing havoc in Kashmir for years to promote their selfish interests and mint easy money at the cost of the common masses in the Valley, who do not see eye to eye with each other and tread paths that suit them. It became clear on January 5, the so-called Kashmir Solidarity Day, that these self-styled separatists are a divided lot and that they are concerned more with their own vested interests than in the welfare of the people of the Valley. Their politics of rabble-rousing, sectarianism and India-bashing could be dismissed as their desperate attempts to remain in the news and nothing else. It would be only proper to say that these so-called freedom fighters are enjoying official patronage one way or the other.
That these separatists do not see eye to eye with each other constitutes just one aspect of the whole situation.
The other aspect is that there are many in the APHC-M who do not like the leadership of Mirwaiz.Reports emanating from Srinagar suggest that the APHC-M is destined for another split as a number of its executive members dislike the way Mirwaiz behaves and conducts himself. That the APHC-M is on the verge of yet another split could be seen from the joint statement that was issued by two senior Hurriyat leader, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Khan and Azam Inquilabi saying they were the original Hurriyat. Nayeem Khan, it needs to be noted, is head of the National Front and Azam Inquilabi is the chief of the Mahaz-e-Azadi. They were senior members of the APHC-M.
The statement that these three separatists issued on Tuesday was highly critical of Mirwaiz and it said that "disruptive elements would not be tolerated in the Hurriyat Conference and the Hurriyat would be run according to goals set by martyrs and wishes of freedom loving people". The statement came in the wake of a recent letter written by Mirwaiz to the APHC-M in the POJK that had directed its leaders not to accord any importance to "representatives" of Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Khan and Azam Inquilabi there. It was this letter that reportedly enraged Shah, Khan and Inquilabi. "The Hurriyat has now been reshaped and the real heirs of the freedom movement have taken over the reigns of the Hurriyat now…We feel the Hurriyat and the movement was in unsafe hands, which have earlier also violated the Hurriyat constitution. The present leadership of the Hurriyat has lost its credibility," Nayem Khan was quoted as saying.
What Shah, Khan and Inquilabi said in their joint statement was a blistering attack on Mirwaiz and it suggested that the APHC-M will split sooner than later. The APHC, a congolerate of about two dozen marginal separatist outfits and disgruntled Kashmiri leaders, was set up on March 9, 1993 and its stated objective was to lead the separatist and communal movement. It split within six months on September 7, 2003 with Syed Ali Shah Geelani quitting it and forming his own APHC.
Everything is now in public domain and it is for the exploited and emotionally blackmailed Kashmiri people to call the separatists' bluff and join the national mainstream. They would do well to join hands with those demanding abrogation of Article 370 so that this pernicious Article is removed from the Constitution and they enjoy the rights the people across the nation exercise under the Indian Constitution.
