SMC's demolition exercise turns ugly after mob attacks demolition team at Gogji Bagh
Enforcement Officer seriously injured, hospitalized

SRINAGAR, Jan 8: Enforcement Officer, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Nisar Ahmad Shah suffered serious injuries after he was attacked by people while leading a demolition drive against one of the leading preparatory schools in the Gogji Bagh area of summer capital of the state.
Reports said that SMC received inputs that the owners of Oasis School, Gogji Bagh had allegedly raised a structure without the permission of SMC. Following this the enforcement team of Corporation headed by Nisar reached the spot and after assessing the situation ordered for the demolition of the 'illegal' structure.
"The owners of Oasis School along with some other persons strongly objected to the demolition drive and said that they have not done anything wrong by raising the structure. This argument did not go well with the demolition team and the team led by Nisar started to bring down the structure. Following this trouble broke out with the SMC officials at the receiving end," said reports.
Nisar along with the other members of the demolition team received thrashing from the people who raised objection over the demolition drive. The demolition team was beaten to the pulp and in no time the situation went out of the hand. The SMS Enforcement Officer received the maximum thrashing and got critically injured.
"The demolition team had to call off their operation after severe beating with Nisar being shifted to the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital. Along with the owners and locals the drivers, teaching and the non-teaching staff was present at the time of demolition. All of them pounced upon the demolition team of SMC and gave the SMC officials a severe beating," said reports.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Media Relations Officer, SMC Masrat Yousuf said that it had come to the notice of authorities that the owner of Oasis School has illegally raised a single storied structure without obtaining any proper permission from the competent authority. The media relations officer said that demolition squad under the supervision of Nisar Ahmad Shah rushed to the spot in order to bring down the illegal structure.
"The SMC officials had to face strong resentment and mob fury from the school officials, drives along with other teaching and non-teaching staff present there. The SMC officials had to face stone pelting and were also beaten to pulp. Apart from Enforcement Officer receiving critical injuries, Ward Officer Jawahir Nagar along with the Building Inspector and Tax Inspector received multiple injuries. An FIR has also been lodged in the concerned police station Rajbagh," said Masrat.
Later in the day, Commissioner SMC, Dr. G N Qasba personally visited hospital to see the injured Enforcement Officer and enquired about his well being.
Meanwhile, Municipal Employees Union held an emergency meeting under the chairmanship of Nazir Khan in the backdrop of the attack. The union in strong words condemned the attack and described it inhuman and uncalled for.
