| CAPD's ration stores run high & dry, people rue | | | ET Report
Udhmapur, Jan 8: Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department's Ration stores in Udhampur district are running high and dry in the absence of ration. Delay in the delivery of ration quota especially in the rural and far-flung areas of the region has become a permanent feature with the CAPD that always leaves thousands of hapless consumers high and dry since a long time now. "Massive pilferage in the CAPD ration supply system has been cited as the main reason and the agitated consumers and even the public representatives time and again have brought the matter to the district administration's notice but the problem does not seem to have been addressed", said an CAPD's consumer, whishing secrecy. He further said that the CAPD claims that the Government was providing rations as per the projected census of 2001 and after that the census operation has not taken place. There is gap between the supply and the public demand and there is certainly shortage at many places of the food grains, according to them. Reports reaching here from remote rural areas including Ram Nagar, Majalta, Garhi, Rambal, Chenani, Kud, Manwal, Khun, Lati, and other areas tell the same story. CAPD depots late delivery ration There is also general complaint that majority of the outlets not only in rural and remote but even in the semi-urban areas often remain closed. There is no proper check on the dealers and monitoring of the food supplies. Sugar quota is released mostly after 15th or 20th of every month and the consumers have to buy it from from the open market till then. There is no adequate supply of Atta in the rural and remote areas and the consumers have to return empty handed from ration depots. Those residing in the hilly and mountainous regions have to track down to reach a depot for procuring food grains and ultimately, many of them leave hope. R.K Baghat, the Asstt. Director of CAPD said that the people are being provided 35 kg ration (20 kg Atta and 15 kg Rice) and 700 gm sugar per member. There are 152, ration depots in Udhampur district in total. Among these 28 belong to CAPD, where as the required no. is 45, and124 are probate dealers; the number of total employees is 48, whereas 80 are required. There is obvious staff shortage, he said. |
