| PDD Enforcement Wing mere an eyewash | | | Jammu, Jan 8: Though the state government is claiming that it has constituted special enforcement wing to recover power charges from the defaulters, number of prominent hotels and industrial units persist to defy the norms and are not paying their electricity bills. After detection of crores of electricity bill default, Power Development Department had recently constituted Special Enforcement Wing has detected major violations more hotels and industrial units across the State. Special Wing was constituted by making internal adjustments on the directions of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, after it was exposed that hotels, industrial units and other business establishments are indulging in power theft by resorting to different means in connivance with the help of PDD. "During the past two months around 100 surprise inspections were carried out and in these cases over Rs 10 crore penalty was imposed but most of defaulters have failed to submit their bills", claimed a officer. Many of the private estate developers are the main defaulters in the city, where the streetlights and water lift pumps were found operating on illegal connections. The industrial area of Samba several major violations by some units were detected and penal action was taken on the spot. Meanwhile, to make surprise inspections a regular affair, the Government is mulling to establish permanent and full-fledged Enforcement Wing in Jammu and Kashmir on the pattern of several other States in the country. Power development department (PDD) claims to have imposed Rs. 3.45 crore on the consumers indulged in the theft of power in Jammu region during past four month. Officials said that department has recovered Rs 2.42 crore so far and action is being taken against the people involved in the illegal withdrawal of the electricity. It is pertinent to mention here that in the practice of curbing the power theft in the state the PDD department in the second week of May had issued an order in which they had asked consumers to disclose their load under Volunteer Load Disclosure Scheme (VLDC), and warned of huge penalty if consumers fail to do so. |
