Power, drinking water supplies badly hit, 5 houses collapse
Valley confronts Snow aftermath

Srinagar, Jan 23; The fragile power transmission system collapsed immediately after season's second snowfall but heaviest of last ten years yesterday plunging Kashmir Valley into darkness. Power Development Department (PDD) officials admitted power breakdown throughout Valley and said that efforts were on to restore the power supply. People of Kashmir on Wednesday spent their day without electricity and according to reports hundreds of areas all across Kashmir were reeling under darkness. As fresh spell of snowfall started in Valley, the electricity immediately went off forcing residents to spend the time in darkness and bone chilling cold.
According to reports, power supply to entire Srinagar including tourist areas of Lal Chowk, Gonikhan, Khayam, Kohnakhan Dalgate, Gagribal and Buchwara went off soon after the snowfall started.
"Tourists putting up in hotels in various areas faced tremendous inconvenience in absence of electricity," they said. In almost entire North and South Kashmir, the power supply was snapped soon after the fresh snowfall. Chief Engineer PDD, Bashir Ahmed Khan admitted that power supply was affected in several parts of Kashmir after fresh snow fall. He said that the Department has pressed its entire machinery to restore the
power supply and hopefully it will get restored by six in the evening. By evening power supply to many areas had been restored, reports said. Meanwhile three people were injured as five residential houses collapsed in several area of south Kashmir's Anantnag due to heavy snowfall.10-year-old Mohsin and his four-year-old sister Sabina, children of Mohammad Yaqoob Dar of Arwani were injured when their residential house collapsed due to heavy snowfall, official sources said.
Four more residential houses belonging to Ghulam Rasool Wani, Abdul Rashid Ahangar of Dhamal Khushipora, Ghulam Hassan Khanday and Mohammad Abdullah of Hillar Kokernag also collapsed due to heavy snowfall.
One person was injured in the incident of house collapse. Due to slippery roads, vehicles could not ply smoothly and dozens of vehicles met with accidents resulting in the injuries to scores of people. At Pantha Chowk a Sumo taxi turned turtle resulting in the injuries to 6 passengers.
