| Youth launch New Ladakh Movement, likely to contest hill council elections | | AAP effect! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi Jammu, Jan 23: Though silently but a change for betterment, empowerment, good governance and corruption free society is sweeping across Ladakh region Named as New Ladakh movement (NLM), the change aims to bring clean and competent governance in Ladakh. Led by internationally acclaimed founder of SECMOL (The Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) Dr. Sonam Wangchuk, the New Ladakh movement has set the agenda of bringing freshness into the political, social, economic, educational and ecological scenario of the region. If the facebook page of NLM is to be believed, the movement is led by the youth of the region and is inclusive of all ages, regions and religions. Though the movement leaders and heads explicitly maintain that they have no political agenda and it is not aimed at getting Union Territory status for Ladakh, youth from Ladakh who are backbone of this movement do not hesitate in saying that Union Territory would augment development of Ladakh. However, mentor of NLM, Dr. Sonam Wangchuk while writing on the wall has tried to clarify that the commotion if not panic on the Ladakhi political scene after the coming of New-Ladakh Movement in the picture is without any reason. He has said that NLM neither intends to fight Assembly elections nor the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Wangchuk maintains "NLM has no plans to run for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in 2014." He has said that NLM is a focused movement to overhaul Ladakhi society, thinking and governance while adding that politics is only a small part of this big change that NLM aspires. He has made clear that NLM is interested only in reforming the system where it matters most to the common Ladakhi i.e. the Hill Council governance of LAHDC Leh in 2015 and LAHDC Kargil in 2018. He has further said that it is on these grounds NLM was started with its first meeting in Delhi on December 21, 2013. Wangchuk has further said that NLM will remain totally neutral during both the elections in 2014 unless a political party or persons associated with it provoke us or attacks us unnecessarily, in which case we will be compelled to defend ourselves with all our strength and will not be responsible for any image damage that may occur to the concerned party. The page clearly shows that youth in Ladakh are joining this movement and it is spreading like wild fire. Such is the fame of this movement that large number of Ladakhi youth turned up to participate in NLM meets in various parts of the country including Chandigarh, New Delhi and Jammu. The students were from diverse backgrounds and from different villages of Ladakh. One common motivation attracted all to the meet cutting across age, religion, sex and village was: how they could change Ladakh for better. Some youth wanted doing away with Rehbar-e-Taleem. Some others spoke about communalism as the biggest threat to Ladakh. Many of the youth were frustrated with corruption, nepotism and opaqueness in the recruitment process in Ladakh. Expressing their frustration, they said "what is the use of my studying for getting job; when I know that money, relationship and proximity with the politician, bureaucrat and other influential people are the basis of selection and recruitment" |
