| Ahead of polls, Soz tightens grip on JK unit | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 23: Two recent political developments in the state unit of the congress party have clearly established the fact that despite facing hiccups in running the affairs of the party unit, PCC Chief Prof Saif Ud Din Soz has been able to emerge victorious and gradually consolidating his grip over the party machinery in the run up to the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in the state. On Wednesday when Congress MLC Ravinder Sharma outsmarted National Conference heavy weights in the Privileges committee by questioning the legality of the committee itself the move was largely seen as a handiwork of Soz loyalists who tried to kill two birds with one arrow. Second elevation of Salman Soz as one of the party spokespersons along side Ghulam Nabi Azad and battery of other senior party leaders is a major achievement for Soz as he has been able to silence his critics in the state unit who always thought he was fast losing his stature in the eyes of the party high command in comparison to Ghulam Nabi Azad. It is no political secret that Prof Soz had even invited wrath of the National Conference by repeatedly maintaining that when former Army Chief VK Singh had denied reports of making allegations of pay offs to political leaders in the state of Jammu and Kashmir the chapter should be closed and there was no need to issue summons to the senior army officer to present himself before the panel to clarify his stand. On Wednesday when Ravinder Sharma, who is seen as Soz loyalist, sprung a surprise during the meeting of the Privileges committee it was largely seen as another master stroke at the behest of Soz. Inside reports claimed that the Privileges committee was contemplating action against Prof Soz but now when the question marks have been raised over the legality of the committee itself the question of taking any action does not arise. |
