| PDP trains guns at NC, urges people to help it change system | | Preparing political ground in Jammu | | Neha
JAMMU, Feb 5: The main opposition PDP has intensified its political activities in Jammu with a view to making inroads in this province. In the process, it is attacking its arch-rival NC and talking about all sections of society, including Dalits, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), women, refugees and other weaker sections. The fact is that former Deputy Chief Minister and ideologue of the PDP Muzzaffar Hussain Beigh has unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign against the NC to mobilize public opinion in Jammu in favour of his party. He has been exhorting the people to "jointly launch a decisive battle against present anarchist dispensation headed by National Conference" and terming the present dispensation as the "biggest misfortune for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "The present dispensation has only brought rampant corruption and administrative anarchy and denial of human rights and pursuing the divide and rule policy and hoodwinking the gullible masses of the state by exploiting their sentiments," he has been saying in the meetings he has addressed in Jammu.
"Coming Lok Sabha elections are an opportunity to channelize anger of the people against this Government...Inter-regional unity will solve all problems of the State...His party will work for the socio-economic growth of weaker sections...Empowerment and upliftment of marginalized lot of the society is main agenda of the party. We are formulating policies which help in inclusive growth and emancipation of suppressed and neglected lot of the society...Socio-economic growth of the Dalits, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), women, refugees and other weaker sections was must for the over-all development of the society...The political programme of the PDP is not to grab power but to replace the present corrupt dispensation with a new system of equality and justice where every individual will get equal opportunity of growth. PDP is seeking mandate to change destiny of the people of State," he has also been saying.
These are all positive formulations and statements which have the potential of damaging the National Conference and the Congress. In fact, the PDP has already created for itself a stable constituency in the Valley. The situation as it prevails in the Kashmir valley that returns 46 members to the Assembly and three to the Lok Sabha clearly suggests that the PDP is standing on a strong wicket there. But its support-base in the Valley is not to the extent that it would be able to get a number of seats it requires to form next Government in the State. It needs to win a substantial number of seats in Jammu province to reach its goal and the most important factor that could work against the PDP in this province is its insistence on self-rule, which, according to the people, is nothing but a replica of the NC's autonomy concept. If the PDP really wishes to make some inroads in Jammu province, it has to identify itself with the popular sentiment of the people here and it is hardly necessary to say that the people of this province, barring a few disgruntled elements here and there, stand for national unity and complete integration with India. One can only hope that the PDP leadership would recognize this reality and moves ahead. |
