| 'Suited, booted' JU employees make mess of Indian Science Congress | | Scientists face nightmare | | ET Report
JAMMU, Feb 5: With official of Jammu University preferring to remain booted and suited, scientists arriving from various parts of the country and abroad face innumerable problems within minutes of reaching inside the venue of 101st Indian Science Congress (ISC).
From complete chaos in the schedule of the conference, abrupt shifting of venues to sycophant employees of Jammu University occupying chairs meant for scientist arriving from various parts of the country and abroad, the Indian Science Congress (ISC) has seemingly been turned into PR building exercise. Barring convener of Press and Media Committee of Science Congress, Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, most of the other heads of various committees can be seen loitering around various venues.
A Nobel Laureate, who had been searching for breakfast venue, was assisted by a senior government functionary after the employees of Jammu University declined to help him, on the grounds that they had to take care of VVIPs. During the inaugural session of the Indian Women Science Congress (WMC) today; scientists, journalists and even guest speakers were seen either standing or searching for someone to get up and given them a seat to sit and listen to the eminent scientists.
The sycophant employees of Jammu University, who have preferred remaining 'suited and booted' from day one without doing much to make this conference a success, were seen sitting in the front rows. Ask for the reason and you would come to know that the Chief Guest on the occasion was none than Union New and Renewable Energy minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah. He still matters in the state administration and his word makes a lot of difference.
The scientists who had come from various parts of the country were seen searching for space to sit. When they failed, they were standing between the rows to listen to the guest speakers. The seminar hall of Indian business school (IBS) seemed insufficient for the audience yet it had been chosen as venue. When asked about the mess, the JU employees reply with contempt and then, refer the concerned persons to the police personnel standing guard at various venues.
Such is the arrangement that Chief Prosecuting Officer (CPO) of Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) has donned upon himself the role of Director General (DG) of the Conference. The only bright light is the Convener of Press and Media Committee of Science Congress, Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, who has handled the media well. It is because of this reason that the entire mess has not come into the notice of the public and the government especially those at the top.
Meanwhile, 101st Indian Science Congress entered into second day today with around 2500 delegates participating in different events held in Jammu. Apart from having difficulties in registration on the inaugural day of Congress, other arrangements for the event like food, hospitality, accommodation too have not impressed the delegates who have come here from different parts of country and aboard.
Talking to early times, a delegate who is teacher by profession from Puri (Orissa) said that he is attending the science congress for the second time and apart from accommodation other facilities were not upto the mark and much worse than the science congress held at Kolkata in 2013. She further said that she faced difficulties in finding accommodation. |
