| Failure to tackle unemployment, energy crisis led to NC rout in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 20: Most of the 1800 Emails received by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, have blamed the NC legislators and ministers for the party's dismal performance in the just concluded Lok Sabha election. Omar Abdullah had sought peoples' view on the failure of the NC in winning a single seat, out of three, in the Kashmir valley. Number of people, according to informed sources, had conveyed to the Chief Minister that since there was no interaction between people and the NC ministers there was anger against the party leaders, especially the NC ministers and MLAs. Sources said that very poor polling from the five to six Assembly segments in Srinagar district was the result of peoples' anger against the NC MLAs. The Chief Minister has been told that faulty employment scheme, Government's failure to check corruption and waste of state and central Government funds on various development projects were also responsible for the defeat of the NC. Omar was also informed by a section of people, belonging to Srinagar and Anantnag districts that poor governance, underutilization and misutilisation of development funds also contributed to the NC's defeat in the Lok Sabha poll. Failure of the Government to tackle the problem of energy crisis leading to prolonged outages had enhanced peoples' difficulties and this too had raised the level of anger against the NC. Above all despite the fact that the NC led coalition Government had framed an ambitious employment scheme the problem of unemployment among the educated youth had built anger among the youth. The civilian strife during the five summer months in 2010 in which about 120 people had been killed in police firing had motivated people to vote against the NC. Besides this majority of people in the valley were not happy with the style of functioning of the Chief Minister who was seen blowing hot and cold in the same breath. Also failure of the NC leadership in securing revocation of the AFSPA and delay in the release of arrested youth and other political detainees provoked people to vote against the NC. In addition to this the NC's promise of restoring autonomy was not fulfilled. A couple of emails have suggested Omar Abdullah to gear up and tackle some of the problems that people face in the state and once governance is improved and developments are spent judiciously and employment and energy problems are solved to some extent NC will rebound. |
