| PDP asks Abdullahs to find a safe seat in POJK | | | Rustam
JAMMU, May 20: All the three Abdullahs - Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mustafa Kamaal - are totally disappointed and feeling highly perturbed, disturbed and alarmed. It's natural. After all, NC president Farooq Abdullah lost the Lok Sabha election in Srinagar constituency to the PDP candidate Tariq Hamid Karra by a huge margin. Srinagar seat was considered the NC's pocket borough. As for Omar Abdullah and Mustafa Kamaal, the PDP turned tables on them in both Ganderbal and Hazratbal, the constituencies the two other Abdullahs at present represent in the J&K Legislative Assembly. The PDP led in these constituencies in the just-held Lok Sabha elections. The PDP led in the Ganderbal Assembly segment by 2913 votes. NC working president and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah represents the Ganderbal constituency in the Assembly. In the Hazratbal constituency that is right now represented in the Assembly by Mustafa Kamaal the PDP led by 3700 votes. Their frustration, fear and disappointment needs to be viewed in this contest. Indeed, the NC's was a dismal performance not only across the Kashmir Valley, but also in the Srinagar, Ganderbal and Sonawar assembly constituencies which were considered safe seats for the Abdullah family. It is obvious that the Abdullah are in search of safe seats so that they could win and remain somewhat relevant in Kashmir politics. But the question to be asked is: Will the people of Ganderbal, Sonawar and Hazratbal oblige the Abdullahs or pin faith in them? If one goes by the NC's performance in the just-held Lok Sabha elections, then the answer is a big no. In fact, the PDP only on Monday taunted and ridiculed the Abdullahs saying things in Kashmir have totally changed and they would do well to cross over to PoJK to find safe seats there. "They can find a safe seat in Pakistan-administered-Kashmir (read PoJK) and should fight from there as our Assembly has 25 (read 24) reserved seats for other part of Kashmir," (read the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh), PDP spokesperson Naeem Akhtar was quoted as saying. The suggestion of Naeem Khan, which, of course, was coupled with a taunt, speaks for itself. It suggests that the Abdullahs have become thoroughly unpopular in Kashmir and that those days are gone when they used to rule the roost in the Valley in the manner they liked. The Abdullahs themselves are responsible for the prevailing state of things in the Valley. They helped the PDP to capture their political space by their acts of omission and commission and by indulging in anti-people activities. It would not be improper to say that Omar Abdullah has caused an irreparable damage to the oldest political party in the state like Rahul Gandhi has caused irreparable damage to the so-called grand old party of India, the Congress. |
